The Real Slumdog Millionaire?
When watching Slumdog Millionaire, there was one thing a lot of people did not understand. In the movie the kids who were from the slums became tour guides and took white people around on tours. Everyone had the same question, how did these kids know English. If they are from the slums how can they pick up one of the most difficult languages in the world? Well here is a video of a kid from the slums who also happens to be selling peacock feathers and check out how many languages he knows. This video was a big hit a few years ago and they just found this kid again in his teenage year and he is still doing the same thing. Check out these clips.

There must be some industrialist out there who can help this incredible child achieve his full potential. Come on you Ambanis and Birlas and Hindujas and Mittals - think, because you are the only ones that can help our country come up.

he is amazing
but my question is: why does he only say the same thing in every language (apart from english)?
if he knows those languages and can actually speak them, that’s truly amazing, and hats off to him…
if he can imitate just that one sentence in every language, that’s relatively not as difficult

My heart goes to those two young children whose acting was far fetched than the main actors in the film “Slumdog millionaire”. Than why did the producers pocket all the profit and the children were given peanuts. Like the rest of the comments, something like this is only allowed to happen in India!!!!
Someone from the film, must pluck up the courage to fight for a rightful payout for these children, who deserved better than the main role actors.

There are many in our 1.4 billion who are as awesome as this kid but never make it cause they are a miniscule part of the 1.4 billion. With his flair for languages, he should be a UN interpreter.

Wonderful kid. Good attitude and has a smile inspite of his situation. The humility and humbleness is what stands out.
I think he seems happy and thats what counts. Perhaps he can school a bit and that will help him more. Some touch ups here and there and this kid will be off the street. Hopefully it will provide him happiness too.
Surely something for the spoiled kids/parents to pondeer.

I have relatives in India who sent their children to convents and are so proud to tell me that they always converse in English. They are proud their children do not write, read or speak in Gujarati, Hindi or any other Indian language.
It is a shame that such a talented kid is not afforded an opportunity to explore what he already has. as they say, ” You can acquire a skill but talent you must have.”

To someone that said if he knows all the languages beyond what he spoke.. I think you missed the whole bus (–point :)). The very fact he learnt these from the few minutes he interacts with folks around him, and is willing to learn in the first place is what is amazing. Give him an opportunity and may be he will learn 10 different languages. Sometimes, it goos to see the glass half-full rather than half-empty…

Selling peacock feathers is illegal in India. Yes! ILLEGAL! People who are purchasing the feathers may be considered to be party to this illegal activity. Peacocks are protected under Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972. Please do not encourage this anti-environment activity. The kid is only conducting his immoral business.

There is such a brightness. Indians are indeed very bright people. Wish he could have progressed to college. There are alot of questions to ask yourself, there are alot of reasons why people do what they do. Pavlov’s experiment may help understand this.

Slumdog has provoked our collective mind. How do we, fairly successful
If we do not wish to waste this psychic provocation, we need to think to transform this provocation into offering such promising kids scholarships for them to educuate themselves so that you could be equipped for life with their training in a profession or vocation. Each of us should finance such a program as our friend Vrinda Bhagwat, presently visiting India tp explore one such project.
Are you interested in detail? Please email.

Companies spend millions of dollar every year training employees for hardcore selling, behavioral training etc. etc.. but see the kind the attitude the guys have, for survival and earning their lively hood, they are not given any training they are on their self…Nothing is impossible, but one has to try harder and harder, its seems pretty impossible to learn so many languages for selling, but they have achieved it, only just by hearing and communicating…what an achievement…really praiseworthy…this should indeed be a great learning for students, employees, workers and management who are provided with great learning opportunity and should work ethically for the development of our country. The day is nearer in history when India would be on the top and would excel in all aspects…My best wishes to all human civilization on this planet…to excel and become productive….Regards SARASWAT

As I always Say: Literacy is not Education, Education is not Knowledge,Knowledge is not Genius. Indians we should be proud of our 800 Languages/Dialects, but we are not. How many languages survive in India today??? Many beautiful languages in the northern belt is eroded by Hindi, we are a diverse people thriving in our diversity, so preserve and be proud of your individual ethnic languages or else Mahatma’s words will haunt us, he said let the Industries grow with the Villages, but we went ahead and built metropolises, villages suffered as a direct result of villagers migrating to metro’s we have a scarcity of food in India, lets not loose our languages too, for if we loose them to metropolitan languages then we will loose our culture, our ethnicity and our unique diversity. Bravo Ravi, let me ask you a question no one bothered to ask, with your amazing ability I am sure you speak many Indian Languages Too.

The best thing to do is to leave him alone, and let the nature show its strength in true market economy, natural education, and greatness of human heart. Learning through organized school system is cheating the nature, as most of the schools only utilize articificial means to impart ‘knowledge’.
To all those concerned about him committing crime must look back at themselves, their own education and economic system to see how much their lifestyle, economic system, and political structure has damaged the environment. Just because they make laws to protect themselves does not make them less liable.
Freedom is the driving force of everything in this universe thermodynamically speaking. This kid has remained relatively free to practice his skills in India. Were he located in any part of a Western country he would be subject to a decaying social service putting him in government institution or worse.
I think we need to create more on street, on the farm, in the factory, in the families, etc. learning environment for our next generation so that they be real people sustaining this planet consuming less and be happy.
This will allow them to feel like millionaire rather than liking to be millionaire and commit all sorts of crime against the nature and humanity.

Ravi embodies the triumph of the human spirit in the most extraordinary way. What an inspiration! But having spent some time recently interviewing residents of one of Mumbai’s slums, I can testify that there are numerous such enterprising individuals who live there, who may lack a formal education but are second to none anywhere in the world in living by their wits. They are ambitious, intelligent, amazingly well-informed, resourceful and indomitable.

WOW, this guy has some talent and is a very fast learner. Seriously, someone needs to make him big. What is he doing on the roads selling peacock fans?? He doesn’t belong there. I really really hope that he is given the opportunity to go to school and make a good career.

Talent, is a god given gift, it is up to humans to make the best use of it. This kid for survival, from the slums of Bombay, has made ends meet. Someone should make a movie about this. He might be a Slumdog, but not a Millionaire yet. I am sure he will get there soon. May the Lord Almighty, bless him.

People,If u look around yourself ,u will find many more Ravis around not only in India, but any where.Since someone spotted him and brought him in the lime light, people r talking about him bringing him to UK orUS.Ofcourse Ravi is special.
After watching this clip,we need to learn that if u can not help Ravi,so what,if u can make difference in one person’s life in any way your life becomes worth living.I’m not just talking in the air,I’m volunteering in a school with autistic kids everyday.

Ravi is a terrific teen. I saw the video when he was younger and now that he is a teenager. He has amazing talent to learn languages - though limited for his limited purpose - and his pronunciation is amazing. India has enormous talent, just need a little encouragement.
I wish him all the best - and opportunities - to go far.

One guy is angry because Ravi is selling peacock leaves which is illegal in India. Here Ravi is making a living unlike the politicians, beaurocrats, police person etc are selling India itself by accepting bribe. He is not thinking about it. Another guy is of the opinion that he is telling only the transalation of same words. Ravi is not a linguistic scholar. He is selling this thing for his livelihood. Sure hats off Ravi. Really inspiring.

The peacock, India’s national bird, may be on the brink of extinction…
The peacock is protected under Section 51, 1-A of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and killing it is strictly prohibited. The export of peacock tail feathers, articles and handicrafts made there from, has been banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and the export-import policy of India. There is a blanket ban on the export of birds from India, yet the illegal trade continues. Live peacocks are still being smuggled. Their feathers are used to make costumes and fans. The Indian peacock is bred in captivity in USA. Thousands are sold each year as pets and also for medicinal use. The legs and claws of the bird are boiled to extract ‘anti-arthritic oil’.
…”When the original Act was made, it was believed that trade in peacock feathers could be allowed because the peacock sheds its feathers but the peacock does not shed its feathers enough for a trade to continue. There is no doubt that the peacock is trapped, killed and then its feathers are plucked out and sent to the shops and trading centres. If it becomes difficult, then mass poisoning takes place.”

Wow!!! The smile on this young man’s face touched my heart. What a talent! I wish him the very best in life. I pray he continues doing what he obviously loves doing and that God blesses him beyond what he could have ever imagined. He has learned so much without formal education… talk about street smarts!!?
For those of you saying comments such as “He is committing a crime” Yes he is committing a crime. It is against the law in India to sell peacock feathers. Though it’s not right to break the law you need to keep in mind that this is how he is making a living; this is how he buys food to eat. The high up’s who are making these laws need to get into the “Slums” and take care of the people so they do not have to break the law. Peacocks are a beautiful bird and I hate to see this happening. I am an animal lover and I don’t like any animal to be killed so that it’s fur or feathers can be sold.. it’s wrong.
For those of you making comments such as “I hope someone powerful takes him and gives him REAL education” I see how what you are saying BUT You have it ALL wrong! This boy is amazing and has grown without what you’re calling “Real education”; he has “Real Life” as his education. He is learning from the resources and people around him, I consider that the best education one could ever be given.
I have seen first hand what riches and power can do to a person… riches/power/fame can be like a nasty drug… it can destroy! Do not wish away this boy’s humility. He is filled with true joy!
Some see his life as hardship and struggle but do you not see the bright smile on his face and the twinkle in his eye?
Look deeper… it’s not about money and riches and what he CAN become… it’s about what he has ALREADY become in his short life… Intelligent, handsome, humble and above all Joyful.
We can all learn a lot from him… you want to do something for him? Look around you today and see the beauty in the land and the people. Smile today just because you can. Be thankful for all the blessings you have in your life. Show this boy that you have not only seen how amazing he is but that you have learned from him; That he is not only seen as having a wonderful talent but that he has truly made a difference by touching so many with his true beauty and zest for life and all it brings.
You Rock Ravi! Be Blessed Always!

The kid is amazing. A true inspiration for all kids. I would say, we don’t have to wait for an Ambani or Hinduja or Mittals to teach these children. But every Indian, takes up the responsibility to educate one child, see what it will do to the present children and the generations to come and to the country. See what you as an Indian can do to the country. Where there is a will, there is a way. It costs about US 75/- or CDN 120/- per child in a private school that charges approx. Rs 400/- per month. Also there have to be schools who are willing to admit these children. So you have to have a place to teach these children near the areas they live. You see the system in India where education goes is two-tiered. Remember in life “the more you give the more you get”.

His smile is contagious and his spirit is unwavering. Next time I am around there, I will make it a point to go see him and chat with him. Talking herat-to-heart will make me happier. I should thank my best friend to snd this clip….its really interesting and make me feel prowd that an Indian can do wonders and can learn any language if he wishes.
But many of us feel ,once we are into an english medium school, passing out and after getting a highly paid job,we become western……by our talks and actions…and look at these street boys as uncultured ,but the real talent lies in these guys, perhaps coz of the starving life, they be the same as they are, lets try to make them come up in life,This is really a lesson to all indians who feel they are westernised by just spending money and learning english and living a hi-fi life

@ Raj “he is amazing
but my question is: why does he only say the same thing in every language (apart from english)?
if he knows those languages and can actually speak them, that’s truly amazing, and hats off to him…
if he can imitate just that one sentence in every language, that’s relatively not as difficult”
Talk about cynical.Sheesh…that’s relatively not difficult? Could you do it?
And it isnt only about the language-it is his drive and motivation. I don’t think half of us work with so much enthusiasm at our jobs we get paid huge amounts for. This shows how driven he is- and he gets Rs.50 for one fan or even less.
So typical to try and find the negative angle.Shame on you.

Those who are poor and less privileged are faced with daily challenges of life. Life to them is like a non ending hurdle race. But they do participate in this tough and arduous race. Some of them emerge as champions of human rights and become shining examples of courage and freedom to future generations. Those who are more privileged must never forget to count their blessings and must give themselves freely for the emancipation of more needy people in the world.
Although there is a gulf between the rich and the poor let us remind ourselves that it is the bold, good and noble heart that makes a man rich. He is rich because of what he is and not because of what he has.

It is one of NATURE’S-MYSTERY that why some of us have NOTHING,but just the HEALTHY-BODY-CLEVER-BRAIN-MIND-COMBO and SUCCEDE and some of us have EVERYTHING,but DON’T-SUCCEDE;because we lack HEALTHY-BODY-CLEVER-BRAIN-MIND-COMBO..!!
If anybody of us who can SLOVE-THE-RIDDLE,we too can not become MILLIONAIRE,but BILLIONAIRE..!!
Because of this UNFATHOMABLE-DIFFERANCE-IN-HUMAN-BODY-BRAIN-MIND,WE-HUMANS MUST HELP NOT ONLY OTHER-HUMANS,BUT ALSO ALL-BEINGS AND ALL-THINGS CALLED THE WORLD OR THE UNIVERSE.
IF WE-HUMANS DIN’T HELP OTHERS,THEN WE ARE SAME AS INSECTS,BIRDS,BEASTS,BRUTES OR ANIMALS.
IF WE-HUMANS WOULD NOT HELP OTHERS,THEN WE ARE EVEN LOWER THAN INSECTS,BIRDS,BEASTS,BRUTES OR ANIMALS.
INSECTS,BIRDS,BEASTS,BRUTES OR ANIMALS CAN NOT KNOW OR UNDERSTAND,WHY SOME HAVE AND SOME DON’T HAVE HEALTHY-BODY-CLEVER-BRAIN-MIND-COMBO;BUT WE-HUMANS CAN..!!
Think about that for a moment..!!

My great fear is that tonight “Slum Dog Millionaire” will win all it’s due rewards and the world will go to bed thinking it was just some nice movie. I even heard a critic on TV last night say he got tired of the “Dickensonian” replay of Jamil’s events for every question, making fun of the notion that kid could have had so many gut wrenching experiences.
Perhaps you did not hear that the children who played the young stars of the movie were not paid, but are being educated, with a trust fund for them at a later date. That made me so happy because the lower cast, the street kids of India, do not get educated. It isn’t by choice, it’s how the system is set up. So how does a person make a living but to beg?
As far as the cruelty toward the children we were told (in 2007) not to give money to street children. For one thing it gives them the idea that this is how to earn a living and does not encourage them to do more. More shocking was that it encourages adults to maim a child so he will be more sympathetic and able to earn more.
Please watch this You Tube piece, sent to me by an Indian friend. Listen to what this child has learned on his own and imagine that mind with an education.
If you haven’t seen “Slum Dog Millionaire,” do and be thankful for all you have. But please do not walk away thinking it is a fairy tale, Hollywood (or Bollywood) or something long past. It is happening today.

The old saying still stands true…Never judge a book by its cover. There is potential in everyone.
Visiting India many times for its beauty and diversity, unfortunately it is evident of the great division between the rich and poor. What amazes me are those just like Ravi who are less fortunate still exude happiness and contentment.
To refute some past comments above, it doesn’t matter whether Ravi can speak more than a paragraph or two in all these languages or not –the beauty lies in the fact that he has made an attempt to learn himself and has groomed himself into an intelligent businessman with great intercultural management skills!
To all the people with cynical comments - you should take note that under his circumstances he is a modest child doing the best he can with all that he has to make a living. Unlike many other boys his age whom have the opportunity for an education and government welfare choose to waste their potential by becoming a menace to society.
Oscar Best Picture goes to Slumdog Millionaire –it shows that all you need is a good script. Many audiences and the academy appreciate the brilliance of this film which captures reality and ones potential.

There are many kids around India not only in Mumbai.
Long ago in the early 90’s I was travelling with my husband around Rajasthan, and came across this little 10 year old who drove the autorickshaw and spoke so many languages and thinking I was a French rapidly started talking to me in French. I was zapped. This is how our street kids learn from life and it is amazing that a Foreigner to our land had to open our eyes to it.Hats off to these kids who do not moon away their lives but enjoy it and learn from it.

Film is not “celebration of creativity”…..it is just any other movie made with goody-goody feel on human relationship and Love prevails non-sense. It is just that it is made by a westerner and distributed by “Fox Searchlight Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures”…hence it made a global opening….
India is portrayed as a pathetic slum which west wanted to see as they do not want to tarnish the image which they comply with.
Rest stupidity of congress to take the credit is cheap and they should try to do something for country rather than taking a bath in the glory of some movie.

MIRACLES DONT EXIST. (SORRY FOR ALL WANNA BELIEVERS)
Why does everybody here wants to believe so badly in miracles that they dont see that this kid learned two or three sentences in each language and thats all. He may be talented but he would surely need a good education to bring it out. Its more of a tragedy that without that education he will still be repeating the same few sentences for the rest of his life. Sure god is great for those here blind to see the tragedy in this boys life. For those who want to actually act and help instead feeding there own need for believing in miracles please do so!!!!

TO COMMENT 302 - MIRACLES HAPPEN WHEN WE MAKE THEM, RATHER THAN JUST SITTING BACK AND DOING NOTHING
For the person who left Comment 302 - at least this kid is doing something for himself, and with grateful thanks to the person who took this video clip, the MIRACLE is that people in the developed world can see what reality is for so many children. At least Ravi is his own miracle and this is the reality of his life.
But I do agree with you, there needs to be a lot more done. There are 43 MILLION ORPHAN REFUGEES in Sub-Sahara Africa alone. Where is the miracle for these children? The answer … there isn’t one … because we became too selfish leading our own lives that we failed the world in which we live, and we are currently failing 43 MILLION ORPHAN CHILDREN in one continent alone.
Ravi deserves this publicity, and hopefully, someone will realize that they need to do something to help. Now that would be another miracle altogether.

This is very touching indeed. How more unfair can life get? Children like these endure years of poverty for no fault of theirs. The only long term way India can redeem its poor is by getting too sensitive about this and not by turning a blind eye. It may appear that the boy is smiling and apparently happy, but that shouldn’t be an excuse (fatalism) to allow the status quo to prevail for long.
For instance, in the UK as well, there are inequalities based on where a child is born. But, people don’t sit and watch this go unquestioned. There are bodies that talk about Child poverty, Govt is held accountable and there are some moves, though perhaps not enough.
In India as well, first, as a people we Indians should each resolve to fight poverty in all ways we can.
It’s really making my eyes smart. May God help this boy realise his true potential and not sell the same item for a pittance.

Slums are not slums- they hide many things- they should be abolished or are they kept to serve some purposes? The boy is very efficient in his trade, as shown. But I must point out that Peacock is an wild animal, selling its feathers is illegal- please check up-
Best wishes for the boy and others who understand and care

Dear Mr. Dominic,
I do not keep popular ideas about these- These are something I do not wish to say many times. Slums are not slums- they hide many things- they should be abolished or are they kept to serve some purposes? The boy is very efficient in his trade, as shown. But I must point out that Peacock is an wild animal, selling its feathers is illegal- please check up-
Best wishes for the boy and others who understand and care.

I have asked my Mumbai offices to track this kid down. The idea is to set up a non profit scolarship/investment fund called the Peacock foundation and help kids like these achieve their dreams. If all the people in this blog are serious about helping, mail me on krk@zenufa.com and we can make our comments and offers for help a reality….

Wow!what a cheerful kid.spontaneous, simple and down to earth.lets not turn him into a robot which any western or indian education is bound to do.
Let’s not bring him into this consumerist, greed driven world and ruin his happines. He is already happy why are we bent on thinking he is not and ‘needs more’?

His SMILE and ATTITUDE something we can all learn from . HE is HAPPY where he is and what he does . HE NEEDS A SPONSOR for his family . I am sure there are many companies in India who can lift him from his surroundings but the question is ,will he or his family . One can try and he can be the poster child for the poor and helpless .

I spoke to the owner of this blog and he is in the works also of finding out who Ravi is. For those of you who are interested e-mail the blog owner currybear@currybear.com. He said he’s putting people on a mailing list to let them know when he tracks Ravi down. I’m hoping somehow they find him and setup a way for me to send money to this great child.

This kid touched my heart bringing out emotions that we keep in check from the world and ourselves. Amazing!!! is a small word to describe this kid … Unbelievable!!! that would be more apt … If all the blessed people in the world take it upon themselves (easier said than done) to help one poor family in their respective country or elsewhere the world would be a better place to live … raw talent like Ravi can be nurtured to its true potential …

Did anyone mention that the peacock is India’s national bird and the export of its feathers is banned, hence illegal?
This boy with his happy face reminds me of when I worked in Varanasi ( Benaras) India a tourist hot spot. There was a snake charmer outside the hotel with similar linguistic skills. The Indians would pay him nothing compared to what he could make from the tourists, the french, Italian, japs and the germans so he learned them all!
Necessity is the mother of invention or shall we say learning??
Perhaps its a good thing the US is passing through this recession as its my hope that something good will come out it.

Hello Ravi and the rest of the Kids,
Your enthusiasm and interest in the visiting Tourist speaks well of your country. Your self-sell in different languages makes the visitors feel at home and safe. Keep up the good work as I’m sure other countries will imitate your style of selling (w/out pressure)and train their own tourist guides to do the same to their visiting tourists. God bless you Guys.

if wonder child is there wonder must be wondered and appreciated to give thus some encouragement and not odd comments like many I have seen in this section. in India we term it god gift and in other countries it is considered to be a talen and a reward for the efforts the child must have made to learn such great things. His holiness Maha Periyaval of Kanchi Kamakothi Peetham was also multi-linguistic personality, but, how many may have recognised. It’s all in life game…..muthu

Ravi and the likes of him in India, need to do what they do. If they don’t they will probably starve. They may be the sole breadwinner in their family. That is why when I hear of people who talk of child exploitation it gets me mad. They don’t know what they are talking about. What we need to give them is an opportunity to see the possibilities…. and assist them in a direction they have an apptitude for, all while they continue to earn their bread….. evening classes, street classes, trade classes, just to name a few!!

March 2nd, 2009 at 4:18 am
I cannot watch the video but I have to share this. Pakistan: is a multi-lingual society conjoined by our language: Urdu
whereas in India: the common language is English. It is such a heavily multi-lingual society that it is brought together by English. from its colonial past it was English that remained in text and Sanskrit. Hindi was historically considered a language of the lower masses (anyone recall the caste system?) and therefore Sanskrit it was. And english
So please. do not be surprised. this, like hte movie, is just very typical India.

The real capability of the human being is the soul nature not only academic - I work with underpriviledged children for over 10 years , training them to become cooks as they did not know what to do when they failed in academic line .
They became very good and won many competitions and are now working everywhere in the world ; they learn and work with feelings but need someone they trust to guide and accept them as they are . hence they are all wonderful kids - if only each of us help one kid ,find a way to be out of the slums and succeed
its possible but we have our ego .
I do what makes me happy by making 1000s of them succeed -its not money that really counts but care and the spirit to make it happen
God bless all those who understand this and guides and support all who dont but God loves all .
Remember these people are the happiest f the world.
Just watch how many sleep in the streets f MUMBAI despite all noises - pollution and watch out how many cannot sleep without alcohol or sleeping pills in 5 star aircon hotel room in the same city .

These kids are fantastic, God gifted. The only thing they need is good guidence .They need to go to school to improve the rest of life, because they are intelligent.Pl. we must help them to go to school. If just 10 people contribute 100 Rs. we don`t have to go Mandirs or other places to do “dan”. God help those who help his fellowmen. Remember ! Who will be the lucy person who will take first-step. Bombay is called the money city
but it has lot of contrast.People are earning in millions but they will not help in hundreds or thousands.Feel pity.

I have worked as a “street hustler”, trying to sell ballot access for the Libertarian Party (a political party that believes in individual freedom) to Americans. I only required them to part with a minute of their time, and their signature, printed name, and address (no money). (One would imagine that this would be easier than it actually is. …LOL.) I speak only English, and I have had a lifetime to learn other languages. This kid totally shames me to try harder, and be more successful.
I understand how he could do it, because I picked up (barely) enough Spanish to get new mexican immigrants to sign my petitions. All street hustling is the art of ‘meme identification’, and appealing to impulse-buying. Even so, it’s extremely impressive that he took enough pride in his work to learn the construction of his particular sale in so many languages.
If he could sell peacock feathers in 7 languages when he wasn’t even a teenager, he has more work ethic than most Americans I know. Props going out to Ravi!

This is India. With all the poverty you have joy and happiness. Unfortunatley, many missionaries use them as poster children, raise money in US and come and convert everyone to their way of living. Shame on them.! They spread the message that kids from the street cannot come up. Nonsense, Ambani’s family which is now in the fortune 100 in the world started his career selling cloths, Jindal another company big in steel startd selling aluminum buckets when they started off and we have several hundreds of politicians in India who were once in the street now billionaries who have basically stolen money from people. There are many like Ravi around the world and hats off to them.

It is disheartening to read a lot of negative comments about Ravi just repeating the same thing in all these languages from memory & about peacock feathers being banned. At the time of posting this there were 473 posts. Most of us wished a bright future and wanted some organization or someone to help this boy. Assuming 10% of us are from Mumbai, I really wonder as to how many of us even went to meet this boy (who is one among million such others).
Even if he is reciting the same words from memory, it is still an amazing feat considering his age, pronounciation & accent. How many of us could speak a few lines of more that 2-3 Indian languages at his age, leave alone foreign ones.
Yes peacock feathers among so many others are banned but still rampantly sold / used in one way or the other. We talk about Ravi doing the wrong thing, How many of us have stood up to the basic injustice meted out at our own educated selves by the social & political system leave alone protecting an endangered species / thing. How many of us have had the guts or dared to enter a slum? Deep down we are all content that such people should be confined to their slums as long as our lives are not affected by them.
Then comes along a movie which won a lot of Oscars. Indians who worked on the movie definitely deserve the happiness, pride & accolades. Personally, this movie should be treated as a creative endeavor & most importantly a very well marketed film. It is shamefully shocking to hear about all the hype & hoopla about the movie. It should be watched as any other movie and forgotten about. This movie does not highlight any socio-economic issues and does not at any point of time commit in doing so. It is a tailor made movie to suit the tastes of western audiences. Most of us even think that the title of the movie is also unique, wonder if this movie with its title would even be accepted if it was made by an Indian or better still if an Indian made such a movie about western poverty with a similar name.
Yes India does have slums, is the land of elephants & snake charmers, but also home to millions of young people like Ravi who stand on their own legs with heads held high, without a worry in the world. I wish I could be like that.
We do have genuine feelings to reach out, we have the education, moral / family values, deep rooted culture, fear of god probably not less than anywhere else in this world, all we have to do is not to wait for any miracle to happen or our third eye to open, just open the pair of eyes we already have & and our heart, reach out & make the difference. India has always & will be strong. It is sad to see today’s generation being misguided by western influence. Every world, country, society has good & bad and India is no exception. But we do have the brain & brawns to overcome anything.
Lets use them and lets not give a chance for anybody to make another Slum D**. Let us not limit our unity to a cricket match or winning a few oscars.
Thanks for your time.
Regards.

Excellent. Ravi at Hanging Gardens in Mumbai with his Indian walking airconditioner is the rightful owner of the 2008 Oscar. At least he hopefully does not get beaten by his dad after bringing pride to India just as Mahammad Ismail did.He definately remains an inspiration to all the young underpriveldged younsters of the Subarban slummish areas. Two hats of to you Ravi and the people who brought him to the world attention on the web. Well done you all.

hi mate, well done for posting these clips. i have yet to read one negative comment from the many i have read. like the many who have commented here, i too am impressed by this young man. and although i have good feelings that this chap will do well in life, i cannot help but feel that he needs the help of other more fortunate people to improving his chances of getting there. so for my part and if this is at all possible, i would like to donate a little to his cause. better still, i’d be willing to give him a job in tourism here in Oman where i am from. to do this, i will obviously need a contact. i am not suggesting that you are an agent representing him, but you are indeed the next best thing. so if there is anyway, please let me know. i am hoping other will follow suit in at least donating to these young and until recently, forgotten people. thank you danny boyle and loveleen tandan. and of course thank you currybear.com

These video clips have also show the world that there exists poverty and deprived children in our midst in this modern generation. The situation is quite the same in many parts of this so-called modern world. Many have also claim to have seen this sort of picturesque in many parts of the world, but just how many have raise a pen not to mention an arm. I guess its an obligation for us to assist in any which way possible for our very own species, with whatever “gifts” He has bestowed upon us. Bless and you shall be blessed.

I stay in Walkeshwar which is very close to Hanging Garden, yet I had never heard of him until now.I returned from vacation in Mumbai around 2 months back and how I wish I had heard of him then,as it surely would have been a learning experience.I liked his smile, positive attitude and contentment around his surroundings.
Many years back a lead child actor from the slums had acted in the film Salaam Bombay and later he was adopted by an American family and settled down in USA.He was given the name Bernard by them, and around 8-10 years back I had read an article about him and in the photographs shown,he had grown up into a young lad of 17-18 resting cosily on a sofa, attending college and planning to do his MBA or something likewise.
Does anybody in USA know about him and his present status?

I am confident that the children of ‘SM’will get a good education, and that a trust fund will be available to them after their education, but i just spotted an article on the Times of India,5th March issue/Bangalore,with regard to the little boy who played ‘Krishna’,the star part in Mira Nairs movie,’Salaam Bombay’,who was discarded after the movie, and left to his own fate,he spent many years wandering, and today is a rickshaw driver, earning 150r’s a day in Bangalore. His name is Shafiq Syed, and his rickshaw number is KA-01-9770.

What an amazing kid!!!! If he had our opportunities what would he accomplish?? So many of you were touched by Ravi’s authenticity and his love for life with so little. You have even wished him the best and hope that he succeeds in life. Unfortunately, this ambitious kid and others like him will most likely not go too far b/c of the circumstances they were born into. His life has not changed from three years ago. Chances are that he would still be in the same spot selling peacock feathers in another 3 years.
I urge anyone who wants to make a difference, to help support organizations that help children to overcome poverty in developing countries. I am part of an organization called Room to Read. They have helped over three million children by bringing books, building schools and libraries. Education is the best exit out of poverty.
Be the change you want to see!!!
May God bless you and millions of Ravi’s out there.

It is really amazing that Ravi can communicate even if is same message in six different languages with such a high zeal and confidence that if proper guidence is given to Ravi, he could make his and his family’s life much easier. Even with his limited resources, Ravi is very hanppy kid and trying hard to make progress. This goes to show every one that India is country with very talented young generation. And internet has brought this talent out in open.

Only praising his abilities are not enough!! we must provide all children with basic education for free as they do here in USA. After that sky’s the limit for them. Who knows, they might discover cures for cancers!!
I would like to help in any way I can so the intelligence is not wasted because a mind is a terrible thing to waste. I have contributed to ASHA for education, 5H (5H.org) and many other charities in the past.
Also I must reiterate Mr.Nitin Mehta’s (March 5th) message….
“This is just a small sample of what INDIAN talent can do there are 1000s of unforunate childrens not getting opportunities to shine. If we take our DIRTY, UGLY politicians from our INDIAN life then our country can shine on Global level.

After watching these clips it makes me feel that we are a spoilt bunch here. We have lots of luxuries in life and yet we are always moaning and groaning. I hope we can implant even a small amount of this kind of upbringing into our future generation.

dear friends who said that the english is one of the most difficult lang. it is the most stupid lang. but spoken by the large no. of people in the world. where this lang. cant get the equivalent word, it takes from the original lang. and adapts it. one more thing this is a cinema where communication is omportant. if the charactors speaks in english what is your problem, just enjoy the movie.

Amazing… incredible… awesome….terrific…. I am still searching for words…
There are so many of them like Ravi out there waiting to be discovered. There is no dearth of talent, it is the support and encouragement that has kept Ravi doing the same job for the past so many years and made easy for the reporter to find him again.
Keep thinking… it is time somebody did something about it.

I was born and brought up in India during the Raj era and went to one of the most
prestigious Boarding Schools in that land. I had to leave in 1947, at the age of 9. At
that age, my command of the English language was not as good as it was in the Urdu I
had learnt by mixing with my Indian contemporise. Organised education may not
always be the definitive rout to knowledge, for everyone! By the way, some of the
wealthiest people in the world are Indians. Yet they choose to ignore the basic needs
of their very own under classes. It is they who are the real ignorant face of India.
SHAME ON THEM!!!!

Naveen & Raj, People like you are a shame for our country. These are thoughts of people who do not acknowledge the efforts of others because they haven’t made any themselves
There are no words to describe your thoughts. The fact that they are totally illiterate and still have managed to pick up so much is incredible.
Try picking up languages without any support, just by listening to other people speak and then comment, and do all this considering yourself totally illiterate.
Naveen, he speaks the same line in different languages as that’s what he needs for his livelihood.

WOW!!!!! What an incredible video or more correctly what an incredible find,I hear a lot of people critisizing Slumdog saying if it was done by an indian we would have not got the recognition , my answer is how many of us are actually looking at what’s happening right under our noses, it took an outsider to find this precious gem,and now the whole world is watching him.Fellow Indians stop cribbing start looking and to ravi I would say JAI HO! The guys like Naveen, Mushu & Raj are filled with negative thoughts. They will know the difficulty only if they tries to speak couple of sentences of alien languages with out any support. Guys; Try to figure out 99 positive traits in a person. Not 1 negative thing; Appreciate the fact that RAVI is managing well to speak to a foreigner in English without basic schooling. Really great that majority are supportive like Mr. Al Jawawi who offered him job in Oman..Let us all do some thing what ever possible to improve life of all poor kids…Skilled like Ravi or unskilled..Let us HELP..

Jaw Dropping!
There are 1000’s of kids like this in India for those who are not aware. This is how they learn to live. And the tough survival in that country is the key to success to all Indians living abroad. They know what real life is and try to make the best out of it when they get an opportunity. Indians (and all those in many developing countries) are the most resilient people in the world. Their life is a test of time in true sense.
The western kids will not be able even understand the depth of it. It is pathetic the kids in the western world cry over pink shoes and silver bracelets….these kids go around without a footwear.
For those who say “Peacock killing is Illegal”. I would say “Just shut up, open your eyes and look beyond that”. I love animals. But, hey -survival of the fittest. If you even have any idea of how difficult it is to make a living here, you’ll know what I’m saying.
May God Bless you Ravi!

In India, particularly places where people speaking different languages flock, it is commonfor hawkers to know few words/sentences to sell their ware. Have you not seen ‘tourist guides’ speaking different languages - may be broken. It is needed for survival. Further, with the dressing habits, marks on forehead and language spokent, it is easy to identify people from different states. To-day, any person, migrated to Mumbai from anypart of four southern states, can fluently speak at least 4-5 languages, well, some times this really helps - which I say from my personal experience. as I have travelled all over India.

I sincerely bow down to this genuine and amazing kid!! His simplicity and smiles bring joy to my heart. He is definitely street smart and we can learn so much from Ravi. I would love to adopt him and give him an education because he has so much to offer the world. If not, how can I help him to have an education. He mentioned his grandmother in the video clip. He is one of the many examples in India.
Answer to comment no.35: Understand he picked up these languages THAT SUITS HIS REQUIREMENT. SO it is essential to speak the same words to sell the peacock feathers. If his requirement is something else, he would have certainly picked up that vocabulary as well.
The secret is: he adopted the natural method of learning: he listens to the languages, imitates the articulation and Understands the same over a period of time and makes it his own. He sounds native while speaking.
Probably if you attempt, you also could pick up any number of languages.
We are STRUCK WITH INHIBITIONS in learning a new language. He is not.
that is all the difference.
God Bless Him. He is not begging. He is selling the product by marketing his Skills.

This is an eyeopener, here on the streets of Bombay its virtually the survival of the fittest.
And these children from below the poverty line make a living by learning to be street smart almost from the time they can talk. This is the only way they know how to feed themselves and their own!You will never see them crying there is always that smile on their face as if to say they have beaten their destiny.. What about the person who shot this video? I think he has a responsibility too to do something for the kid since he has met him first hand and that too twice in some years. How has Ravi’s situation changed since then ? So many people are interested in helping out. Surely you can do your bit to channelise this into something really special for Ravi and not just record something which will be insignificant in years to come.

After the comments on Ravi is the symbol the ultimate survival & what it akes to make it in India. He is saying if you apply yourself you can achieve almost anything. Hat’s off to you Ravi!
P.S. posting 149 makes a good point, however, misses the essence of survival & business world on the streets of India. Something adults can from young Ravi.

Really? This many people have viewed this video and managed to completely overlook the obvious? Slumdog Millionaire shows the story of kids from the slums in India going through those terrible “schools” to learn “smart” ways to beg. For those who have been to India - I’m sure you’ve actually seen a blind child singing ghazals. I can never forget the kids who I have met and who are starving but will turn down offers of food. They are required to bring back cold cash. I pray that this child hasn’t been abused and someone will save him from being trapped in the slums.

Well, some parrots can be taught to speak in multiple languages. So whats the big deal? True intelligence comes from being concious about your potential. And in India, skill and talent is rampant but not being dynamic enough is still a bondage. This young boy better wise up fast r else he’ll continue to be a tourism cheap act on the streets for the rest of his karmic cycle.

amazing ! saddens me too that someone who has so much of potential is still there where he was years ago.
want to comment on naveen’s comment ( number 34 )he says :
“he is amazing
but my question is: why does he only say the same thing in every language (apart from english)?
if he knows those languages and can actually speak them, that’s truly amazing, and hats off to him…
if he can imitate just that one sentence in every language, that’s relatively not as difficult”
c’mon guys!!! you are not a critic here.what do you expect out of him ?? a child who is everyday struggling with questions of survival, even if he does say the same thing in each language and doesnt know any better, he is still commendable. how many of us know even that ?? just one sentence in say around 10 languages ????

What an amazing boy and all the children who are like him the world round. Thanks to whoever took the video and shared it with us. It warms my heart and makes me count my blessings.
The sad thing is, I agree with writer 713 in that Ravi can’t continue with what he’s doing in the future and still be able to support a family. In truth, children are children. They may be smart, intelligent and clever but they are extremely vulnurable to exploitation, threats and control by adults and the system they live in. Is there a way therefore, of helping Ravi and children like him whilst at the same time, making sure that all financial contributions go directly to them and nowhere else?? I’m sure we have all been aware of incidences reported by the media where resources, food supplies and medical help to areas of deprivation/emergency have been hijacked by the very people who are supposed to distribute them. Also, there have been so much publicity about ‘con’ and ‘hustle’ that it’s difficult to sift the genuine from the fake. I would really like to help but would like the assurance that any financial contributions do reach the Ravi and kids like him.
BTW, writer 724 made me smile. Yes, if Ravi received a rupee for every viewing, he’d be able to just watch the peacocks walk by.

I am sure there are genuine people out there watching this Video and wanting to help but until it is officially announced or he is taken in by a proper NGO or something it will be difficult to just wire the money and stuffs. Well, unless you come and meet him in person and do all the needful. But people like this kid are really smart they can survive and if they are shown the right way they will go very far, i wish i live in a city nearby. Someone living in his city can go and talk to him and Mobilize or something regardless of whether S/He is able to help cos there are people willing to help but someone needs to take up his case.

Very, very inspiring! I just watched “Slumbag Millionaire” and this young fellow is for real. I note one comment was to “educate” him!! Where? in our educational institutions so organised and dogmatic thus robbing the freedom that is innately ours. The time has come for us to wake up and realise that a large part of the mess our world is in, is, due to maligned education systems. This young kid is proof enough! Bless him and his kind.

I don’t think any blog has ever received so many comments. So we all think Ravi is great and being the fine folk you are; all of you (may your tribe increase), I agree wholeheartedly with Bal Ram Singh Reply (No:99)A beautiful creature will flourish and grow anyway: Just give it its Space!
With more Ravis and people like you, my brothers and sisters and women of the night, This is a “Wonderful World” aka Sachmo!

it means if you have the will to learn u dont have to go to school..
it means that learning capabilities are also not dependent on what intake of food you have..
it means further that all languages are equal and not one is any difficult than another provided you want to learn them..
it means also that the thoughtful filming of one tourist and posting to the internet makes a celebrity out of an otherwise downcaste member of the indian society..
the phrase INDIAN AIRCONDITIONER for the handheld fan is the ingenuity the kid has developed on his own..
I am sure of one thing the power of world united media internet is surely going to make a hero out of him which is better in many ways..atleast we learn from him to do whatever we are doing with interest and strive to take our works to perfection.

This is unfortunately exactly where danny boyle failed to depict our little slum boys accurately. Necessity is the mother of invention and ravi has invented himself to serve his need, but the authenticity lies in the grammatically incorrect english and the limited vocabulary in various languages for his designated purpose. He manages to hold a conversation in english (which i doubt he can do in all the languages and really doesnt need to for his purpose) and this NOT a jab at all at him but at the failure of the movie to use the opportunity of a movie to show exactly this side of reality (authentic slum accent and vocabulary and all with its realistic limitations AND passion.)We have a lot of survivors and passionate, talented children in India (and not just india)… Lots to do for them to the best of each of our abilities if we care to.

As long as India fails to provide free, compulsory, good-quality primary education to every child—in the slums, in the villages, in the cities, in the mountains—so long will children like Ravi have to waste their talents acquiring a smattering of 17 languages in order to sell peacock-feather fans, instead of being able to fulfil their huge potential & contribute to the tasks of nation-building.

Not a single word or sentance can speacks what thouse vidio.., Kids r god given, mankind learn from birth or before the Birth from womb But this is the MULTIPAL product of our Great Indian politics and all Indian political parties after freedom of 60 years, They just speaks does do anything for any level of people EXCEPT 1% WHAT THEY SHOULD DO………It is our responcibility,We must creat the society which can give the correct oportunity to everyone and sustainable for every level of mankind which should start from basics like humanity and honesty….THE KIDS R SUPERB, India Leaders must do for poor KIDS… ITS MASSAGE FOR DEAR SONIA/ PRIMINISTER OR INDIA OR ANY ACTIVE POLITICAL PARTIES LEADER … IF YOUR CHILD IS DOING THE JOB LIKE THIS WHAT WOULD U DID DIFFERENT FOR THEM OR SOCIETY……WE SHOULDN’T BE PROUD ON THE SYSTEM WE MADE FOR THOUSE KIDS…AFTER 60 YEARS OF INDEPENDENT….ITS TIME FOR CHANGE…….

Perseverence, talent, intelligence, confidance, pleasant, smart, witty and honest answers to be admired. Many aspects a marketer could learn indeed, and indeed an eye opener for all students.
Given the oppertunity, direction, guidance, encouragement & education: imagine what great heights Ravi will be able to achieve?I have watched this video many times and everytime I see more and more qualities he has in him and, as he says he has picked it all up from the streets near the hanging gardens.I wish him every success.

I’m spellbound and speechless and feel so small after watching the ease with which this kid, Ravi is able to speak in 7 or 8 languages to sell his ware of peacock feather fans. It is amazing. If he can pick up words from tourists and remember to say them in sentences without any education, he is a genius and someone should pay for his living and send him to school. With a fantastic memory, he should learn any subject with ease and do well in the school and later in college. He has a great future with proper education. It is sad that he is selling on the streets of Mumbai to support his family. There are gems like him in the slums of Mumbai and all over India. I hope the next government in India will ensure that every child is sent to school like the ‘no child left behind’ policy of U.S. Government. Hats off to Ravi, the wonder kid.

You can’t cage a free and joyful spirit like Ravi’s,even with the best of intentions. He might probably then lose the driving force that makes him so astounding an example to all who see him in action. May God keep his spirit young, strong and free all his lifelong and bless him abundantly. And thanks CurryBear for your great job in presenting this ‘blossom in the dust to us , and showing your genuine interest in him by a follow-up 5 years later! Way to go, man! l

The biggest thing I learnt in India is that so many people and animals are in desperate need of help and unconditional love. It gets to the point where you just can’t keep turning a blind eye and pretend you are a having a great holiday.
Ravi has the potential to do something real with his life. Lets not keep saying “Wow, he is amazing”
Lets do something to help him?
Anyone got any ideas?

Children learn languages very quickly and this boy is amazing. Having experienced my son who is only 10 living in Australia but learnt Hindi, Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada I wish the boy above a very bright future. I wish some one help him pursue his education and become a great master or probably a research scholar. It is sad to watch such kids are without any resources and wandering around for day to day living. I am really moved by this. Good luck to you my friend

God Bless Ravi and all the people of the slums. They all need a chance in live, like any other human being.
It is high time we get the corrupt slumdog politicians made extinct…..
These politicians should be the endangered species that need no protection from extinction.
Yes, it is a shame when most politicians (all over the world) are corrupt and greedy, while millions like Ravi get by with meagre means to live and struggle by.
