Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Is Pakistan’s First Oscar Nominee
I decided to add a new section on my site called Awesome Desi People. It’s hard to find famous Desi people to look up to. Sadly the ones we do find are singing about 2012 being the end of the world. I decided to add this section to focus on people you probably have not even heard of or didn’t know were Desi.
My first person on this list is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy became the first Pakistani filmmaker to earn an Oscar nomination with her film Saving Face, which was nominated in the “Documentary, short film” category. You are probably thinking big deal, she made a documentary. Well it is a big deal because of the subject matter. Saving Face, which the Karachi-based filmmaker has co-directed with Daniel Junge, depicts the life of a British Pakistani plastic surgeon who donates his time to heal acid victims in Pakistan. Sometimes when a girl turns down a boy for a ristha (marriage proposal), the scumbag boy will throw acid on her face so she may not marry anyone else. Yeah, now you feel stupid for asking “what’s the big deal” huh? Funny thing is, this film is not released yet. It will be released in March, so keep an eye out for it. I’d like to induct Sharmeen to Curry Bear’s List of Awesome Desi People and as soon as I watch this film and find out who the British-Pakistani Plastic surgeon is, he’ll be on this list too. If he’s cute and single I might even give you his number, If he is not I’ll get you a free boob job.

If the movie is about plastic surgery why does she look like she’s in a helicopter?
That picture is probably taken from her first documentary that actually won an Emmy, called “Children of the Taliban”.
Either way she is definitely an awesome desi person. I can’t wait to see how else makes this list.
How common is this acid throwing? I would expect it done in the villages, but do they also do it in big cities?
I throw some acid up in the air sometimes says ay yo, it’s in your face yo!
